Phil N. DeBlank Hits Record Button One Last Time

Phil N. DeBlank Hits Record Button One Last Time
“The Last Tape” ~ Phil N. DeBlank (PV2)

Phil N. DeBlank released his debut PV2 LP, “Analog Out“, in September 2021. The public response was lukewarm but critics and producers recognized the artistic value of the project. DeBlank tends to choose concepts that are over the average listeners head and “The Last Tape” is no different.

For instance, how many of you are familiar with Samuel Beckett’s one man play from 1957, “Krapps Last Tape“? Yeah, we didn’t think so. The premise of DeBlank’s “The Last Tape” is based on the play.

“Krapp’s Last Tape” by Samuel Beckett inspired DeBlanks new LP

Krapp is an elderly man and today is his birthday. To celebrate, he digs up old tapes he recorded in his youth. Hearing his younger, much more self-assured and lively self causes a range of emotions in the ageing character. When he finally attempts a new recording, he quickly realises that he has little to say and that there isn’t much left to celebrate. I won’t spoil the ending in case you haven’t seen it but you get the gist.

DeBlank’s “Last Tape” is more ‘Mood Music’ than ‘Beat Tape’. The sample choices are obscure and well produced. Will this project finally get Phil N. DeBlank the audience his quality of production deserves? Probably Not. Does DeBlank care? Probably not. Is this really his last tape? We hope not.

“The Last Tape” will be released on PV2 Records on July 29.

Phatbrane reminds me of Thelonious Monk.

Thelonious Monk recording Session

They’re both kind of crazy and they both have a similar approach to music.

The same way Monk set the boundaries for be-bop, Phatbrane is re-setting the boundaries of lo-fi.

The sounds he’s been coming up with for “The Lo-fi Theory – Vol. 1”, dropping April 16, 2021 (PV2), would definitely have Thelonius Monk dancing around his piano.

Phatbrane is raising the bar and pushing the envelope. As the “The Lofi Theory” gains a buzz the expectations will increase.

Meanwhile, we get a new single, “Thoughts”, dropping January 15, 2021(PV2).

Hailey Simone haileysimone.xyz reminds me of Joni Mitchell.

When Joni arrived on the scene she had a beautiful voice, an undeniable musical talent and she also had something relevant to say. Hailey is of that same ilk.

Both Joni and Hailey have impeccable melody and lyric creation skills and both are perfectionist.

Hailey is able to communicate her feelings to the listener as sincerely as if she were pouring out her feelings and beliefs to an analyst. She has the lyrical power to make her listeners feel as if they’ve known her for years, while her voice and production skills are simply astonishing.

Hailey has been working on her album, “On The Heights”, dropping May 2021 (PV2) and she’s also been involved in production for other artists.

Yesterday I got a frantic text from her, “Send me the logic file ASAP! We must delay the release.” Apparently, she’d been listening to her master tracks and wasn’t quite satisfied with something.

Nevertheless, she will be dropping a single, “Maladaptive Daydreams”, January 15, 2021 (PV2).

Archive: Something Is Happening and You Don’t Know What It Is

Saturday, 11/28, 2:43 AM

I’m up… Eating a leftover bluefin tuna steak and mac n cheese with a light drizzle of truffle oil.

I just came to the same realization that most moderately cognitive and semi-conscience humans should eventually come to.

That realization is: Something is happening and we don’t know what it is.

Anyway, I been up since 5AM.. Friday morning…so…I digress.

The initial offering for PV2, “The Tester EP”, by Phatbrane (catalog #1001), has been completed and I anticipate its release in mid-December 2020.

It involved a lot of sacrifice on behalf of the entire crew. Hailey Simone voluntarily pushed back the release of her debut PV2 single, “Maladaptive Daydreams”, to ensure that Phatbrane had his promo and marketing in place.

FINALLY, something is happening and we know what it is!

PV2 plans to release albums from Phatbrane (The Lo-fi Theory), Hailey Simone (On The Heights) and yours truly (Something Is Happening and You Don’t Know What It Is) in 2021. We’re currently negotiating to sign Savior Kash and we’re pleased with the progress.

Recently I told Phatbrane, This is Def Jam 1986. I’m Russell, Hailey is Rick and he’s LL. The Tester is I Need A Beat.
